Robert E. Lee
• Lee urged Southerners to reconcile with Northerners at the end of the war and reunite as Americans, when some Southerners wanted to continue to fight.
• He became president of Washington College after the war, and remained there until his death in 1870. The school is now known as Washington and Lee University. He is buried there and this statue is a memorial in the college chapel:
