- In the election of 1876, the Republicans nominated Rutherford B. Hayes, the governor of Ohio, while the Democrats, out of power since 1861, selected Samuel J. Tilden, the governor of New York.
- Both Republicans and Democrats accused each other of cheating during the election.
- The votes in Florida, Louisiana, Oregon, and South Carolina were in question and this kept either side from winning.
- An electoral commission was established to resolve the issue and eventually there was a compromise.
The Compromise of 1877
- Three Southern States agreed to cast their electoral votes for Hayes if he agreed to to withdraw federal troops from the South, provide federal funding for internal improvements in the South, and name a prominent Southerner to the president's cabinet.
