The End of the Civil War:
Surrender at Appomatox Court House, VA April 9,1865
- General Lee and his Army of Northern Virginia were surrounded, outnumbered, and cut-off from supplies. Lee was urged by some to disband his army and send them home to later continue a guerrilla war against the North, but he refused. On April 9, 1865, Lee met Grant Appomatox Court House, VA and surrendered.
- Upon General Lee's surrender, Union General Ulysses S. Grant allowed the Confederate soldiers to return home. These are the terms of surrender as written by Grant.
